Day 2: BERLIN

Friday, January 6, 2012

Ringggggggggggg, Rinnnggggggggggggg ... This sound is the alarm clock, it sounds like every morning, but today it has another tone, it has a holiday sound.Touch get up without turning around in bed and start enjoying the city of Berlin. We will start the day leaving the Park Plaza Wallstreet Berlin, our hotel in Berlin and making one of the most special visits we can do in this city, the Berlin Wall.
With this song we woke up this morning, ready to eat Berlin ... since we can not eat anything else, because in the accommodation we have booked these days, the Park Plaza Wallstreet Hotel in Berlin We don't have breakfast included.
So first of all we have stopped at the cafeteria of a gas station near the hotel to have breakfast and start being people.
A cappuccino, a single coffee, 3 pastries and a water for 9.40 '- euros ... not bad for the prices in Spain. For now we thought the food would be more expensive. We start the day well :))

With the most toned stomach we have set off for The Berlin Wall. This is one of the visits that we most want to do, one of those things that you know you will see someday, but until today the day had not come.
The weather is not too good, but for now it does not seem to rain, so we are happy.
At the beginning, as we approached the Berlin Wall, we were very clear where it began, since we have been seeing a “kind” of walls with graffiti, until after finally we have seen the images that so many times we have been able to see in reports about the Berlin Wall.
Luckily we were not very convinced and we have not taken the camera just in case ... if not often ridiculous!
We travel the kilometer and three hundred meters slowly, without haste. Stopping in each image to be able to see it calmly and take photos.
A good option to learn more about the history of the city is to book this free tour of Berlin with a guide in Spanish. Free!

We find some murals in front of those that really stay with our mouths open.

Without missing details of East Side Gallery (Berlin Wall)

Some of them we had seen at times (never live) in reports, books ... etc but the time to see them live is priceless. Especially for what they represent, for the emotional burden they carry behind.

Although it is early, as we move forward we go across more tourists. We are surprised that although it is not very cold (not as much as we expected), we do not see many people on the street.
But we follow our own ... which at the moment is, despite what it represents, "admire" what we have before us.

As soon as we saw this image, we could not hold back, it took us a while to find a support where we could take a picture together. But in the end we found it !! :))

Suddenly we find a part of the Berlin wall where there were many people taking pictures, maybe it was the place where there were more people and look where it turns out a souvenir shop on the Berlin wall!!

It has been almost two hours and the sky is quite covered, but at the moment it still does not look like it rains, so we took advantage and reached the Oberbaumstrasse bridge.

After taking the photos of rigor, we take the subway (2 simple tickets: 1.40 '- euros per person) to get to Alexanderplatz.

Berlin subway

Routes in Berlin ... where will they take us?

There we leave the subway with our mouths open and we face the Fernsehturm, known as the Alexanderplatz television tower. It is bigger than we thought and we realize that the buildings in this area are still like the ones we have seen so far in what has been our city tour.
At the top of the Television Tower is the magnificent Sphere Restaurant revolving restaurant. You can book luxury dinner here while enjoying the best views of the city or on this page if you just want to book the entrance to the tower.

Fernsehturm

I dont know why but Berlin It is transmitting coldness to me ... will it be because of the dates in which we have come? 🙂

Berlin buildings ...

We go traveling Alexanderplatz square Seeing the most significant buildings.

We found the World Clock in an area where we stopped for a while Alexanderplatz, to see some images that call us the attention of city transport.

In the same street several roads are intertwined and several transports pass at the same time, this, together with the gray day that surrounds us, makes the city quite dark and somewhat decrepit.

Transport in Alexanderplatz

Views from Alexanderplatz

From here we go in search of Radisson Blue hotel in Berlin. And the truth is that it took us a long time to find it, although it is right next to the Cathedral and there we have been admiring the aquarium they have at the reception.

Aquarium at the reception of the Radisson Blue Hotel

We look at the time and it is already past 12, the truth is that we are a little hungry, but we prefer to wait a little, to go to the site that we have been recommended. Although it is difficult to wait, seeing according to what things ...

Currywurst mobile beach bar… mmm… delicious !!

So, despite salivating a bit, we are going to the Berlin Cathedral, to take advantage of visiting it now that we see that it is not bad weather and we can take advantage of the views from the dome of the Berlin Cathedral.
If you are going to visit many places of interest in the city such as the Cathedral it can be a saving to buy the Berlin Pass, which includes transportation or the Berlin WelcomeCard.
Another interesting option if it is your first time in the city and you want to know its history better is to book a city tour with a guide in Spanish.

HumboldtBox on the way to the Cathedral

Views of the Berlin Dom

We show our “UOC student cards” and they give us reduced admission, so we pay 4 euros each instead of 7…
Not bad this card ... hahaha
We do not like the “entrails” of the Cathedral, I don't know how to explain it, but they are too modern (?) We go through corridors and open doors until we reach the spiral staircase that takes us to the dome, from where we have some Awesome views of the city.

After being up here, we have to say that it is one of the cities that we liked least from the heights.
From here we are going to visit the crypt and when we go out we find an image that catches our attention: inside the Cathedral: a bar, a shop and a bathroom… in which they ask for 40 cents to enter !!
Ladies and gentlemen ... the "souvenir shop" in a church is not the first time we see it ... even the cafeteria we have seen in some places ... but the paid bathroom ?? !!! This has been the last. With the church we have encountered ...
From here already laughing or half a mosqueados by the image that we have just seen, we go straight to the Nicolai neighborhood of Berlin, where we look for the Zur Gerichtslaube restaurant that we have seen recommended many times in the guides and in the forums and we want to try it.

Nicolai neighborhood

We finally found it and after verifying that the atmosphere is very relaxed and warm, we ordered battered pear (very good!), A sausage with cabbage and a scallop, with a coke and a beer, this plus 2 express, all for 42 euros
100% recommended restaurant. And at a very acceptable price quality / price.

Delicious!!!

With a full stomach to burst and before we set off for the Brandenburg Gate, we delighted for a while among the streets of the neighborhood, where we took advantage of buying some things ...

Souvenir shop in the Nicolai District

To go to the Brandenburg Gate, we pass again through the Berliner Dom and at this time of the afternoon, it has a special charm ... the light begins to be much dimmer and begins to wrap it, giving it a special halo.

Berliner Dom

Strolling through Berlin

In this area we do not want to entertain ourselves too much, since tomorrow we will dedicate part of the morning to tour it and enjoy it.
Where we do stop is in the famous sculpture by Käte Kollwitz, "Mother with the Dead Son"
We stayed a while admiring the sculpture and the place where it is located. The truth is that it is a success. It impacts us and leaves us speechless again.

"Mother with the dead son"

From here we go to Bebelplatz where the 1933 book burning memorial is located.
We see a glass on the floor and looking through it you can see the bookshelf that recalls all those books that burned on that date.

Bebelplatz 1933 book burning memorial

This area of the city is almost all under construction, so it does not convey too much warmth to us either.
The idea is to go to Check Point Charlie in Berlin, but before we stop by some windows that attract our attention ... judge yourselves! :))

Luxury in Berlin

Car Dealers Shopping Center

Mini Dealer Entrance

After taking some photographs and dreaming of luxuries we stopped at a cafeteria to rest and have coffee.
We are not too long, because we see it getting dark and although we are right in front of Check Point Charlie, we want to take some pictures with a little light.

Check Point Charlie

Check Point Charlie

We see that it is after 5 in the afternoon and it has already got dark, so after buying some gifts, we set off to the Topography of Terror, where we are almost an hour reading and seeing photographs of the time.
From here we go to the Brandenburg Gate, where we find a huge avenue, much brighter than the rest of the city of Berlin and very guarded (especially the US embassy)

Brandenburg Gate

Here we are having a good time taking pictures and seeing that it is after 7 pm and that as always when we travel we anticipate the meal times, we go to the Sony Center to try an Australian restaurant that we have been recommended!
Before entering we visit the Shopping Center a bit, where we don't leave the astonishment aside.

Sony Center

This city is full of shopping centers !! And getting bigger!
Almost at 8 pm we enter the Corrobore of Berlin, where we ordered some kangaroo fajitas and a plate with kangaroo fillet, crocodile and Australian chicken. The meat very good, although the kangaroo is a little hard (we have tried it elsewhere and it was tastier)

Kangaroo Fajitas

Kangaroo, crocodile and Australian chicken

These dish plus a large beer and a coke for 40 euros and that is a recommended restaurant.
The truth is that so far the food is going pretty well in price.
We leave for dinner and decide (rather our body decides) that it is better that we go to rest, so we take the subway and go to the stop that leaves us in front of the Park Plaza Wallstreet Berlin.
We have fallen dead !!! We can only download the photos ... lie down and before closing our eyes write this diary ... mmm ... our eyes close ...
Morning… .Berlin… much more!!!!!
